This Dataset shows the location of the Conservation Areas within the Boundary of Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Conservation Areas were introduced by the Civic Amenities in 1967, by recognising that areas needed special protection. The legal definition of a Conservation Area is "an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance" For More Information on Conservation Areas please visit the Councils website. The local authority is obliged to consider which parts of its area are of special interest and must also consider whether a proposed development would harm the character of that area when considering planning applications
This is a Uniform Constraint Layer
Newcastle-Under-Lyme Borough Council created the dataset. The local authority can designate new Conservation Areas, the earlier ones in the 1970's were made by the County Council. The Dataset was created from boundaries made on the most current mab base available at the time, and have then been added to more current boundaries on a best fit basis. A review enables anomolies to be corrected.

We have 20 Conservation Areas and the first were designated in 1970 and the latest in 2006 with a number of them having subsequent reviews at various points. (details of this on website). The local authority can designate them, the earlier ones in the 1970's were made by the County Council I believe.
